Profile of Success

Nan S. and dog

Nan S. (#2121) is a former high school math teacher and coach from Indiana who settled in the Bay Area of California in 1980, and after 22 years moved to Grass Valley. She is happily married to Bob and has an 18-year old son, 2 rescue dogs, and a cat. They live in their dream home located between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe.  Nan is very active in volunteer opportunities in her area and also works part time at a winery's tasting room. Her career path leading up to her semi-retired status has seemingly paved her way into the Shure Pets business.

Nan says, "I found myself in a most precarious situation after moving to California. With a degree in education, I could not get a teaching job! So I took a less-than-desirable job as a junior clerk at a computer company that trained people from all over the world how to digitally design automotive parts, circuit boards, and architect buildings...Within 15 months at the company, I worked my way up through the ranks and became a full-fledged CAD instructor, but as luck would have it, 20% of our company was laid off the day I taught my first class. Disappointed and unsure how I was going to pay my rent, I got a recommendation from a friend, and one month later, with this new computer skill under my belt, I took a 10 year job at Lockheed teaching CAD, PC and MAC classes to engineers and administrators, facilitated the New Employee Orientation classes, and served on the Lockheed Recreation Board of Directors. The best thing was that I was TEACHING! It's amazing how I took that seemingly awful position as a junior clerk, yet it all turned into a huge benefit that, unknown to me at the time, prepared me for every other position in my life, and where I am today with Shure Pets. The common thread between all the ups and downs was my attitude and how I accepted life's curve balls. I ducked, swerved, and swung at a few of those balls - but when I struck out, I always did it with my head held high, and used the brokenness as a place to start over and grow."

Nan has been to Uganda twice to support her church's involvement with a group of women and orphaned children. She finds a lot of similarities between Shure Pets and the organization she worked with in Uganda. Nan says "they are both organizations that are trying to teach people life skills - and empower men and women to make some money so their lives are better."

Even though Nan says she is still quite busy even being semi-retired, her priorities remain in balance.  "I have learned to say "no!", and my passion to build my Shure Pets business and help others grow theirs is at the top of my list."

Thanks Nan!  We look forward to continued success with you!

Letter to my Cats

Dear Cats,

When I say to move, it means go someplace else, not switch positions with each other so there are still two of you in the way.

The dishes with the paw print are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help, because I can fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king size bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue to sleep on the couch to ensure your comfort. Look at videos of other cats sleeping, they can actually curl up in a ball. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space used is nothing but sarcasm.

My compact discs are not miniature Frisbees.

For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob, or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. In addition, I have been using bathrooms for years -- feline attendance is not mandatory or helpful.

The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other cats' back end. I cannot stress this enough.

To pacify you I have posted the following message on our front door...

Rules for Non-Pet Owners Who Visit and Like to Complain About Our Pets:

1.  They live here. You don't.

2.  If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. (That's why they call it "fur"-niture)

3.  I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.

4.  To you, it's an animal. To me, he/she is an adopted son/daughter who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly.

5.  Cats are better than kids. They eat less, don't ask for money all the time, are easier to train, usually come when called, never drive your car, don't hang out with drug-using friends, don't smoke or drink, don't worry about buying the latest fashions, don't wear your clothes, don't need a gazillion dollars for college, and won't get pregnant because they've been "fixed."

Dear Pet Lover,

More and more pet lovers are demanding only the best for their pets, spending over $41 billion on their pets in 2007.  The pet industry has become the second fastest growing retail segment behind consumer electronics and is projected to continue to rise.

At Shure Pets, we empower pet lovers with the opportunity to get involved in the growing pet industry by mixing business with pleasure through at-home Pet Parties dedicated to pampering their pets.  We have uniquely merged the growing Pet Industry with the proven Direct Selling industry to offer an exciting business opportunity.  If you have a personal passion for pets, we give you the opportunity to simultaneously earn a supplemental income or build a career around bringing others the best products for their pets.

We offer pet lovers an alternative way to purchase quality products for their pets, including organic and all natural items.  We view the intimate setting of the Pet Party as the best venue to offer the highest caliber products for owners to purchase and sell.  Our Pet Parties are lively, social events for pets and their owners that are educational, as well as fun and interactive.

We offer an exclusive line of organic and all-natural health and beauty aids that are made with key natural ingredients such as vitamins and plant extracts. Our products utilize many natural and organic ingredients to ensure the best for pets as well as the planet.  In addition, all of our beauty aids are produced without animal testing and are all recyclable, further demonstrating our concern for pets and the environment.

If you would like to become a Pet Consultant or attend a Pet Party, feel free to contact us at 1.888.SHURE.PETS or visit our website www.shurepets.com for further information.

Our only requirement is a passion for pets!

Pet Dental Health Awareness

February is pet dental health month. This is a perfect time to review or initiate a dental hygiene plan for your pet. Pets have teeth too, and it is unwise to take those pearly whites for granted--or are they pearly white? Dogs and cats have teeth that are similar to people. Their "baby" or deciduous teeth are replaced at 4-6 months of age by adult teeth. These teeth need to last a lifetime. Improper care for teeth can lead to dental disease. This can have undesirable effects in the oral cavity such as tartar build-up, inflammation of the gums, bad breath and dental pain. In addition dental disease can have detrimental effects on the rest of the body. Bacteria from the mouth can lead to disease in the kidneys, liver and heart.

So how can you best take care of those teeth? The best first step is to have a professional dental examination. This will give your veterinarian an opportunity to evaluate Fido's gums and teeth. From here an appropriate oral hygiene program can be established to meet your pet's needs and temperament and your lifestyle.

Home care should ideally include brushing of the teeth on a regular basis (at least twice a week). There are numerous pet pastes available. When choosing a paste be certain it does not contain fluoride (fluoride can lead to stomach upset). Pastes provide you with an abrasive action on the teeth helping you to remove soft plaque on the teeth before it turns into hard tartar. Many also contain an antibacterial enzyme system. While brushing is the best plaque remover - if not possible - alternatives include antibacterial gels, chew toys / rawhides and treats. They will have abrasive action and also enhance saliva production (saliva has enzymes that are antibacterial). Some caution should be used with chew toys to avoid foreign body ingestion (supervision is recommended). There are also dental diets that can be used as maintenance diets with kibbles formulated for maximum tartar control.

Professional care may also be advised. This is a multi-purpose procedure. It includes scaling of the teeth to remove tartar both above and below the gumline followed by polishing to smooth the enamel surface and to remove and small residual tartar. The gumline will also be probed to detect any pockets around the teeth. If present these pockets are flushed with antibacterial to prevent bacterial growth. A fluoride treatment is often performed as well. Extractions can also be performed at this time if deemed necessary. Once the teeth have been professional cleaned home care to maintain good oral hygiene is very important.
