Interview of Marilyn Mathews

Describe your job:

I sell all-natural Shure Pets products. Their line includes shampoos, conditioners, ear cleaner, treats, toys and fun clothes. I display their catalog and several of their products, and take orders at my pet grooming business, K-9 Karousel, in Anaheim. I also have a customer sign-in sheet so I can ask clients when they might be available to host or attend a "pupperware party." These parties include getting acquainted with owners and pets, learning about the health benefits of Shure Pets products, observing a live demonstration with my dog Lulu, providing catalogs and order forms, answering questions and letting others know how to get involved in this business.

Your background?

I was in dentistry for many years but I had always wanted to do something with animals. When the dentist I worked for moved to another state, I decided to go back to school and learned to be a pet groomer with the plan to open a shop as soon as I finished. I opened K-9 with no clientele in August of 1996 and now service close to 4,000 pets. I saw two articles on Shure Pets and thought I needed to call them, so I did. Once I got the information, I said, "This is for me."

Your typical day?

I probably go through the catalog two or three times a day with a client. I make sure to get all my customers to sign the book regarding when they're available to have or come to a pupperware party. Then I can set up party dates. I plan to do a minimum of two per month. For each event, I go a half-hour early to set up, bring food, take Shure Pets products and treats. When I do a party I try to book as many more as possible.

Best thing about the job?

I schedule my own hours and do the business on my own time.

Biggest challenge?

Probably getting people to want to have the party at their house.

How many hours a week do you work?

7-12 hours.

Advice for someone interested in a job like yours?

I would go online with them, show them everything, let them read the materials having to do with being a pet consultant and help them fill out the paperwork. During their future with the company, I would always keep in touch with them, just a phone call away.

What motivates you to do your best?

Because I am a perfectionist and I love the animals.
